I Wanted to Write About Love
By Canada Cutter
I wanted to write about love
but, I’m sure you already know,
the sounds of voices talking
over a piano can be distracting
so you and I just stand and
watch a surprise dessert
make its way to a couple
I think they were celebrating
a Tuesday night worth a note
on the bill saying “Thank you
for sharing the same air as us.”
Sorry, I got sidetracked
again, you know how poetry
floods out and all I can
do is watch the sun rays
warm our faces into new hues,
isn’t it beautiful that the sun
can kiss us too? Maybe poems
are meant to be about getting
lost in the things we bend to
understand like how time
isn’t real and how you can sit
here beside me and wonder if
we’ll ever be able to use the right words.
But they are the right ones,
they come from you.
