A Night at the Theater

A Night at the Theater

By Anthony Romero

She lives her life by the script
Reciting her lines as the show goes on
Sometimes she stumbles through a word
Sometimes she struggles through an act
I wonder if she’s rehearsed enough
And feels prepared to take on her biggest role
I wonder if she’s ready to embrace the limelight
And perform in her biggest show

Will the crowd erupt with applause when the curtains call?
The audience is eager to respond; they’re ready to judge
But I can’t criticize because I have guided her

Our fate is sealed; the ushers have closed the matinee doors
A fate I have accepted and will see what the play has in store

I clutch the program in my hand, sweating as she takes the stage
This is the play I came to see
The play that will be her coming of age
